Week 1: Teacher Tasks

The intent of this blog is to guide you through the process of slowly and steadily setting the stage for your students to regularly practice keyboarding at home. If you follow it, you willl be on your way. The first step is to dedicate 15 or 20 minutes to a class discussion. It's not time to think about usernames, passwords or logging in to a computer yet. Lab time is not required.
  1. Hold a discussion in your classroom - Suggested time = 15 minutes
Dedicate some time to a class discussion about the importance of regular keyboarding practice.
View lesson plan with key points identified and handouts>

  2. Assign homework: Send home note to parents requesting information via a brief online survey. Or, if you regularly communicate with parents via email or a blog, copy and paste the link to the parent note to your email or blog, then send it to parents. You will receive the results from the survey.
    View and print parent note>
Coming soon:
  1. View a GoogleDocs presentation on correct keyboarding techniques complete with suggestions for use with students.
  2. Learn to easily monitor student self-recorded practice records.
  3. Receive feedback from parent sign up and information collected.
  4. Follow up email from myself to parents and teachers, using current addresses collected through the online survey.

If students are not yet using Custom Typing, it is not yet time to give them usernames and passwords. Parents will help you keep track of this, so let's get some on board to make this manageable.

There is a report you can access when you are ready to have students log in to Custom Typing, but don't worry about this now.
